What inspired you to start HUWA together, and how did you identify a niche in the men’s jewellery market? Hisham says that his interest in lapel pins, cufflinks, and watches began at a young age, and he had been collecting them for years. He had also been designing jewellery for himself, family, and friends. When he moved to Egypt, he realized that it was difficult to find men's accessories or jewellery. This lack of supply sparked the idea for a business that catered specifically to men's jewellery. They began exploring different styles and tastes and creating pieces that were suitable for everyday wear.
They faced challenges in establishing the brand, as they had to introduce the concept of men's jewellery as a standalone idea. They had to create a production line that supported this idea and show men that wearing jewellery could be both stylish and practical. Another challenge was changing the perception of men's accessories and normalizing the importance of men's jewellery. However, they have seen growth in demand since they started in 2017.
Traditional craftsmanship plays a significant role in HUWA's jewellery. In Egypt, they rely on traditional methods for about 80% of their manufacturing. While modern design elements are important, they appreciate the process of seeing traditional pieces come to life. It does require more time and effort to get artisans to create modern designs, but it adds a unique touch to their jewellery.
Although there isn't one specific memorable moment for HUWA, they have been endorsed by celebrities, featured in publications, and participated in important events. This has helped enhance their brand and credibility.
Sustainability is a priority for HUWA. They use high-quality materials like sterling silver, 18k gold, brass, and natural stones to create lasting pieces. They also have a 0-waste policy where waste is reused, recycled, or upcycled. They constantly strive to improve the quality of their products and listen to customer feedback to provide a better experience.
Hisham and Nancy advise aspiring entrepreneurs in the fashion and accessories industry to be patient, have thick skin, and never give up. They emphasize the importance of love, creativity, and passion in pursuing a business in this field.
HUWA believes that the demand for men's jewellery is growing, and they are ready to meet the needs of their customers with bold and stylish designs.
